There is a reason Idaho is known as the Gem State! And while many people know Idaho by that name they don’t know just how diverse our State’s mineral resources really are. To help people understand the industry’s impact on our State, the economy and the job market, we created an infographic.
Idaho is home to 240 different minerals. One of those, the star garnet, is only found in significant quantities here and in India. But Idaho has more to offer than just gorgeous gemstones, many of the minerals found here, like copper, gold and antimony, play a critical role in U.S. security efforts.
Currently, Idaho has three substantial mining districts. Northern Idaho is home to the Silver Valley, it is the top silver mining district in the Country. Zinc, copper and gold are also found in the area. Our Stibnite Gold Project is located in Idaho’s Central District. During World War II, 90 percent of the nation’s supply of antimony and tungsten, minerals that were critical to the war effort, came from this mining region. Finally, we have the Phosphate District in Southeast Idaho. Phosphate is a key ingredient in fertilizers and critical to helping farmers keep up with the world’s growing food demands.
Mining has a significant impact on Idaho’s economy. With property taxes, state royalties and income taxes, mining had a more than $37 million impact on the State in 2013 (including the multiplier effect). The industry has contributed $272 million in direct payroll in 2013. And with the average mining salary coming in at $105,000, it is among some of the highest paying jobs in Idaho.
